An article by Aaron Snyder
What is a goal?
To me a goal is a
self sufficient road to happiness. To reach a goal you
will have to go over many hurdles and even get knocked
down a few times. But once you reach your goal you
have set for yourself all of those hurdles and knock
downs are worth it in the end.
I do have cerebral palsy but
that has never stopped me from setting goals for
myself. My goal was to get a full time job in the
media field whether it be radio, television or sound
engineering. To do this I quit my part time job in
radio and moved my life across the country to
Orlando Florida to go to an audio engineering school
where I learned about music production post
production for film and anything else you could
think of in audio. I finished the program in June of
2007. That same year I had to move back home with my
parents because I hadn't found a job yet.

The Process of finding a full time job: Getting your foot in the door in the media or audio field isn't easy. I sent out countless resumes to every place I could think of around the country. I didn't care where I lived because I just wanted to be full time employed. In October of 2007 I get a call from a gentleman in Atlanta Georgia at a radio station asking if I was still interested in a job. This was the first call I had ever gotten and since I always think positive I figured I'd get the job. I had a phone interview with the producer in November of 2007 and it went really well. So I had my hopes set high to move down to Atlanta whenever they decided they needed me. This is where I got knocked down the first time on my road to my goal. In February the place in Georgia went on a hiring freeze so I was back to square one. Months went by of frustrations of still living at my parents house and being unemployed. I want to make it clear that I love my parents but when you are 24 years old and living with them it really gets to you. May of 2008 I applied at a place called Echostar and had an interview with them. I thought I had this job in hand but once again I would get knocked down and not get the job. So frustrated with being shot down too many times I stayed down for a while and quit looking for a while. During this whole time I would have at least two days in one week where I felt very down, frustrated and wondering if I was ever going to catch my break
Holidays and being unemployed: Before Thanksgiving came around I knew I couldn't take another year of being unemployed and living at my parents house so I decided to apply at KCWY tv news 13 in Casper Wyoming. I got a call from the chief engineer for to drive up for the interview. Once again the interview went well but this time I was 100 percent sure that I had the job in hand for a few reasons. They needed help because they were so short handed in the master control department. They always say a third times a charm and this was the case. A week later he offered me a full time job as a master control operator. I haven't been there long but love working there already because it's a great group of people to work with and it is hard to call it a job. This brings me to my next issue I want to talk about.
Disability unemployment rate. Did you know that 70 percent of people with disabilities are un or under employed? They are probably sitting at home playing video games all day and being bored like I was for a year and a half. This is something that needs to change but it starts with the individual with a disability and their support staff if needed to go out and prove to employers that you can work. I think a lot of people with disabilities are afraid to go out to the workplace because they feel they won't succeed or aren't good enough. Well guess what you're 100 percent wrong if you think that. Find your passion and make a living doing it. The next step is for employers to look past the disability and look at them as human beings and future employees. My past employer and current employer did so I know this can all happen because I am living proof of it and that's what gives me hope to see people with disabilities to not be afraid to get employed. You feel better about yourself when you are productive 40 hours a week. Like I always say if you have a dream or a goal the only thing that is stopping you is yourself. Yes you will face battles along the way but they make you stronger in the end. An article by Aaron Snyder
